Overhead Games started with the development of ePic Character Generator in 2013, when we realized that while we love role playing and story telling a lot, we lack the ability to quickly illustrate our character ideas visually. Following a successful Indiegogo campaign the project went through several iterations, and has been released in March, 2014. It quickly became a loved solution for any players and story tellers, while it was also picked up by game creators and developers, both in the physical and digital domains, and was used to illustrate visual novels, card and board games alike.
The team was originally consisted by 2, but during development we worked together with various other contributors both in programming and art to find the right balance between spending resources and getting things done. After the release of ePic Character Generator we took our time to create more content for our users to work with, and also to get feedback on what direction should we continue development. In 2015 the software received a large overhaul in the UI and also launched a handful of new characters in a new format, which made mixing content of individual packages available. We also streamlined our development process and created tools to help us automate as much as we could. We also published the software on Steam at this time, following a successful Greenlight campaign.
In the meantime we also took on various contract projects and helped other studios deliver their games to the market. We released the first mobile version of ePic Character Generator on Google Play in 2018. Since then, we focused on creating additional and diverse content collaborating with various artists to bring new and fresh styles to our software in order to enable developers and role players to represent even more unique characters in their stories.
In 2019 we took a big step forward and started working on our next project, while continuing to support ePic Character Generator and also releasing regular updates and new content for it. We enjoy creating tools for gamers, but we love crafting games ourselves even more. We are currently developing a detective role playing game, which we expect to announce and release in 2020. We also offer publishing to small indie groups and individual developers to help them get to market easier and faster, so various projects developed by external teams can also be found in our portfolio.
ePic Character Generator is an excellent tool to anyone who wants to create realistic character avatars in no time. You can simply choose what items to display on your character, save as an image on a preset or transparent background and use it for anything you would like to. You don’t have to worry about lighting or finding the right camera angles, as everything has been prerendered and postworked for you, so creating characters are really just a matter of clicking some buttons! Using the Portrait packages you can even create hand-drawn style images very easily.
The software is mainly used by role-players to illustrate their player and non-player characters, but don’t have the resources to create or buy many unique characters that fit their needs. The option to save the images as tokens and cards simultaneously even reduces the work needed to use the pictures in a session moments after they’ve been created. The characters can be saved and loaded using our custom file format, which enables an easy way to manage character progression, as changing little details are quick and convenient.
The generated images can be used in commercial products as well. You may find card games, board games and books illustrated with the images created by ePic Character Generator. For a few examples, visit https://epicgenerator.net/made-with-us/games-made-with-epic
